1. Stony Valley Rail Trail

The Stony Valley Rail Trail is one of the oldest railroad trials in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Originally part of the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad, the portion making up the Stony Valley line closed from 1944-1949 to later become the Stony Valley Rail Trail. This historical trail has hundreds of visitors yearly. 

To access this trail, you can park your car a few minutes north of Harrisburg and walk or ride for as long as you like. There are different sights to see each season, and you can enjoy various paths and reservoirs nearby. The 19-mile trail has multiple parking areas, so you can walk for as long or little as you like. 

2. LeTort Spring Run Nature Trail

The LeTort Spring Run Nature Trail is located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, just a quick trip outside Mechanicsburg. You can access this 2.5-mile trail at three entrances, and there are plenty of activities and sights to see along the path. You can stop to read eight signs along the route to learn more about the trail, nature and surrounding wildlife. 

Bring your dog and walk along the stone surface of the trail. The flat grade is easy to navigate while helping your dog get some energy out. Half-mile markers along the path help you keep track of your distance and location. 

3. Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail

The Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail is owned and maintained by the Derry Township, just outside of Harrisburg. All dogs are allowed on leashes on this 13.5-mile trail. You can walk along most of the township and enjoy access to parks, neighborhoods, commercial areas and more. Depending on your stamina and your dog’s energy, this trail is ideal for an all-day hike or a quick walk around the neighborhood. 

4. Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

If you have time to make a drive for a longer trail, bring your dog to the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. This path starts in Shippensburg. This 12-mile trail has five trailheads, so you can find the ideal spot to begin your walk. There are plenty of benches along the path, which you can use to rest, relax and enjoy the scenery. 

5. Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area

The Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area is a large conservation park north of Harrisburg that’s open to guests and pets. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources protects this area. Residents and visitors can enjoy open fields, walking paths, guided walks and other activities. 

During the warm months, you can visit the Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area to see rolling fields of wildflowers or watch for different species of birds and butterflies. There are plenty of trails and fields available for you and your dog to enjoy.

6. Simpson Park

Located on South Market Street, Simpson Park is the perfect spot to take your dog for a nice walk right in Mechanicsburg. This 18-acre park has a walking trail, pavilions, picnic tables and plenty of space to stretch your legs. Bring your dog and a friend and enjoy a leisurely walk along the path.

7. Wildwood Park

Wildwood Park is home to lots of wildlife and various hiking trails and picnic areas. Leashed pets are allowed on any trail, and all of the trails are open from dawn to dusk. 

You can enjoy wooded areas, fields, meadows and forests during your visit. The longest trail available is the Wildwood Way Trail, which extends about two miles. If you’re in the mood for a quick walk in nature, you can walk your dog along the Delta boardwalk and look across the marsh and wetlands.
